Seven-year Bible study ban broken at Illinois public housing complex

An senior citizen in one Illinois city will now be able to hold Bible studies in her public housing project after officials had denied her that right for seven years. For the past seven years, a resident of the SilverTrees Apartment complex in Richmond, Illinois, had wanted to hold a Bible study in the community room of the complex. However, officials with the McHenry County Housing Authority repeatedly denied her request, saying church and state could not be mixed in public housing. After being contacted about the matter, Orlando-based Liberty Counsel sent a demand letter to the Housing Authority, outlining the constitutional rights of the elderly woman. Liberty Counsel founder Mat Staver says the situation has been resolved, and that the woman who prohibited the Bible studies has been removed from her position with the Housing Authority."Seniors living in public housing facilities have just as much right to have Bible studies as you and I who live in private homes," Staver explains. "Our client obviously is thrilled with the fact that the seven-year journey has now come to an end-and we are pleased that the McHenry County Housing Authority, after receiving our demand letter, removed the tyrant who banned Bible studies for seven long years."According to Staver, it is unfortunate but not uncommon that officials at some public housing facilities prevent common rooms to be used for religious meetings. But the attorney suggests he would not be as patient as the SilverTrees Apartment tenant. "I would not wait for seven years," he says. "I would not wait for seven days to resolve this."The Bible lessons will start next month.
