Iran may be acting as 'less of an enemy' in Iraq, says expert

A terrorism analyst with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies says a news report suggesting that Iran may be "cooperating" with the United States in Iraq should in no way lead one to believe that Tehran is a "partner for peace."An article in USA Today cites experts who believe the 50 percent drop in attacks by Iranian-linked armor-piercing roadside bombs may indicate that Iran is "cooperating" with U.S.-Iraqi efforts to stabilize the mid-east country. David Gartenstein-Ross with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies says Iran may be sending fewer weapons into Iraq."That's not exactly a partner for peace, but it may appear that Iran is functioning as less of an enemy," says Gartenstein-Ross. "Right now it's difficult to tell, whether because Iran is doing less of it, or because Iran's capabilities have lessened. But either way it's definitely the case that there has been a massive drop in attacks by Iranian weaponry over the past several months."Gartenstein-Ross attributes the success of the U.S. troop surge to the drop in attacks. He says Iran benefits from instability in Iraq because if the U.S. is "bogged down" in Iraq, it is less likely to take action against Tehran's nuclear program.
