'I Will Not Be Dictated To By Extremists'

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan has come just two months after she told Sky News her party would not be dictated to by extremists. She survived an initial attempt on her life in October when a suicide bomber killed 139 people at a homecoming rally for her in Karachi. She was campaigning to become Prime Minister for a third time. After the attack Ms Bhutto told Sky News her Pakistan People's Party would take extra security precautions but would not be deterred from holding public rallies."We didn't give a call for people to come out, but I was encouraged to see that in nearly every single village men, women and children all came out," she said.Ms Bhutto, who was 54, was born into a political family. Her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was Prime Minister of Pakistan in the early 1970s. She was educated at Harvard and Oxford and later became leader herself - from 1988-1990 and from 1993-1996.She was twice dismissed from office by the president on corruption charges she claimed were trumped up.The stength of character for which Ms Bhutto was renowned was first seen after her father was imprisoned and charged with murder in 1977 following a military coup.He was executed two years later.Ms Bhutto spent five years in prison herself, most of it in solitary confinement. She later set up a Pakistan People's Party office in London and began a campaign against the then President, General Zia.She returned to Pakistan in 1986 and became PM for the first time two years later after General Zia was killed in an explosion on board his aircraft.A decade later, she faced corruption charges and was convicted in 1999 after failing to appear in court. Pakistan's Supreme Court has since overturned that judgement.Ms Bhutto left Pakistan shortly after her conviction and lived with her three children in Dubai. She returned to Pakistan in October after President Musharraf granted her and others an amnesty from corruption charges.
