DENVER-It certainly made for quite the winter wonderland on this Christmas Day, and provided quite the surprise to residents.“I think we expected a few flurries and there's probably eight or nine inches now. It's just like Norman Rockwell," said Denver resident Adam Haynes.Denver officially recorded 7.8 inches of snow on Christmas Day.The major snowstorm had sledders like Max Van Paasschen tearing up the hill in Robinson Park.“It’s really cool because (Christmas Eve) was like balmy and I was thinking we weren’t going to have a white Christmas. But then, I woke up this morning and looked out the window and there was snow everywhere,” said Van Paasschen.The heavy snow also kept Colorado Department of Transportation crews busy, trying to make sure that motorists made it to grandma’s house in one piece.“I was surprised because I thought I was going to have the day off. But this is Colorado and we have families too. We take a lot of pride in the fact that we can keep everyone going during this time,” said 14-year CDOT driver Cliff Corwin.Even with that effort there were several spin-outs and traffic accidents reported including several on Interstates 25 and 70.The storm dropped the most snowfall in Denver on Christmas Day in more than 100 years. The previous all-time record for snowfall on Dec. 25 in Denver was 6.2 inches, recorded in handwritten records in 1894.Meteorologists say the latest storm boosted Denver's December snow total above 15 inches-about 7 inches above average for the month.Depending on where you live, you saw anywhere from an inch to over a foot of snow. Denver had reported nearly 8 inches.The snowfall follows last year's 0.2 inches that fell in Denver on top of 15 inches left over from a blizzard that started Dec. 20 that paralyzed the city and closed Denver's airport for 45 hours.Before last year, the last time snow fell on Christmas in the Mile High City was in 2000, when the official reading at the old Stapleton Airport was 0.9 inches.Snow is expected to keep piling up in the metro area as another winter storm moves into Colorado. Denver is under a winter storm watch for Thursday with the weather service predicting additional snowfall of 4 to 8 inches by Thursday evening.The record for the 'whitest' Christmas ever recorded in Denver is still 1982, when records indicate 24 inches were on the ground. However, most the snow from that storm actually fell on Christmas Eve before midnight. The second whitest Christmas was recorded in 1913-19 inches. Followed by 2006-when there was 15 inches on the ground.
