China goes to Senegal's aid

Dakar - Senegal's defence minister said on Tuesday that China had given its military US$2.2m worth of trucks, ambulances, communication and mine clearance equipment. The minister, Becaye Diop, also said the two countries had signed an agreement for a second shipment of military goods of equivalent value.China's ambassador to Dakar Lu Sha Ye said the donation showed Beijing's desire to help the Senegalese army in its peacekeeping missions.Senegal has deployed troops in various peacekeeping operations on the continent notably in Sudan's troubled region of Darfur, Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The west African country restored diplomatic ties with the Asian giant in October 2005 after a 10-year break during which the African nation recognised Taiwan, regarded by China as a renegade province.
