Rival factions clash in north Lebanon, one dead

TRIPOLI,Lebanon-One person was killed and eight were wounded on Tuesday in a gunfight sparked by a personal dispute between supporters and opponents of the Lebanese government in northern Lebanon, security sources said. They said the clash in the northern port city of Tripoli occurred between members of the Sunni Islamic Tawheed movement, a group close to the Syria-backed opposition, and the pro-government Tripoli Battalions group. There were conflicting reports on the identity of the dead man. One security source said he was the son of the leader of Islamic Tawheed while another security source said he was only a member of the group.Security sources said the incident, which erupted near the Islamic Tawheed's headquarters in the Abu Samra suburb, escalated from a dispute between two men.A military source said the army surrounded the area after the shooting. Tensions are high in Lebanon as rival political leaders remain deadlocked over finding a new president to replace the pro-Syrian Emile Lahoud who stepped down on Friday when his term ended. Both sides have accused each other of arming and training their followers. The Lebanese army fought a 15-week battle with al Qaeda- inspired militants at the Nahr al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli this year. More than 400 people were killed.
