PESTILENCE WATCH:FDNY: 2 Firefighters Treated For MRSA

NEW YORK-City health officials have tried to do what they can to calm fears after a 12-year old Brooklyn middle school student died last month from the drug-resistant staph infection known as MRSA. But this morning, FDNY officials confirmed two of its own are being treated for the so-called "superbug."According to fire officials, two firefighters are currently being treated for the infection. Five others firefighters had also contracted the infection at some point in the past year, and each was treated and returned to work.In the case of the young boy who died recently, his mother is accusing Kings County Hospital of negligence and carelessness because an emergency room doctor failed to diagnose her son, and instead gave him the over-the-counter medication Benadryl and sent him home. He died two days later. But, in most healthy people, health experts say the infection will heal on their own or with treatment. They add that MRSA is usually transmitted skin-to-skin or on surfaces touched by an infected person. In the cases of the firefighters who have been diagnosed with the infection, each works at a different fire house and all are expected to be fine. The word from fire officials is that they are not alarmed by the recent cases, but they are reminding firefighters not to share towels or razors, and to keep the firehouses clean so as not to spread the infection any further.

As in the days of Noah....
