As an alumnus of The Ohio State University (B.A. Political Science, ’95), I take great pride my alma mater, though not just for the globally renowned academics, nor the world-class facilities, or even the unparalleled pageantry that is Buckeye football (especially following a win against Michigan). Instead, I take great satisfaction in being associated with an educational institution whose faculty, staff, students and supporters regularly display unmatched ingenuity.Take, for example, how two Ohio State student organizations, the respective campus chapters of both the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim Student Association (MSA), decided to participate in the recent Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week in a very unique way. Not content to bring just critics of Islamofascism to campus to warn of seemingly distant dangers, such as David Horowitz, Daniel Pipes or Robert Spencer, these two student groups actually hosted at our fine university one of the prime examples of homo islamofasciae in North America, Dr. Jamal Badawi.You have to admire the sheer brilliance of the organizers. To my knowledge, no other university or college participating in Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week (certainly not in the Big Ten, at least) offered their community a chance to see an actual Islamofascist in action. Participants in the CAIR/MSA educational forum, ironically entitled “Interfaith Relations – the Muslim Perspective”, were invited to observe Badawi for an up-close and personal study of the North American species of Islamofascism.Sadly, I was not able to attend the festivities, but a subsequent press release by CAIR quoted CAIR-Ohio president Asma Mobin-Uddin in her description of their Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week event: “The opportunity to listen to Islamic scholars like Dr. Badawi was a great opportunity for the community to become educated, and it gave people the change to ask questions about things they may have heard about Islamic teachings.”No doubt, Badawi was able to educate the attendees on some of his favorite points of “Islamic teaching”, such as:
*Polygamy (it’s consistent with “Islam’s realistic view of the nature of man and women and of the various social needs, problems, and cultural variations”);
*Wife-beating (It’s OK as long as it’s never on the face);
*Acceptable conditions for suicide bombings (permitted as long as its for “repelling unprovoked aggression or resisting severe oppression);
*Justification for executing Muslim apostates (as long as it’s for treason against the Islamic state).
Certainly the Ohio State chapter of the Lesbian Avengers loudly applauded when Dr. Badawi discussed his 2004 fatwa for Islamonline outlining six different conditions in which a wife may properly be beaten according to his understanding of “Islamic teaching”, because, as he states, “there are cases, however, in which a wife persists in bad habits”....
