Defense analyst says Iranian army, Revolutionary Guard unhappy with mullahs

A defense analyst says the United States needs to convince Russia that the best future for Iran is a government that is not dominated by either Washington or Moscow.Dismissing the possibility of a U.S. military strike, a spokesman with Iran's foreign ministry says his country is ready to consider a new round of talks with Washington on security in Iraq. The Bush administration has held three sessions of ambassador-level talks with Iran about Iraq since May. But the U.S. has also kept up pressure on Tehran for its support of Shiite militias in Iraq and its continued pursuit of nuclear weapons.Greg Copley, president of the International Strategic Studies Association, believes the Iranian military, and even the Revolutionary Guard, are tired of the ruling clerics and are prepared to stage a coup d'etat against the regime."The question is how do you manage that process," he says. "The Iranians want to say we need to get rid of the clerics at all costs and whatever happens is going to be better. The Russians are saying, yeah that's fine, but we want a stable government and we don't want that government to be dominated or controlled by the United States," explains Copley.Copley believes that the United States must alleviate Russian concerns. He says Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the U.S. must convince Russia that the goal is for a stable secular moderate Iran that is not in the pockets of either country.
