Death Toll Tops 1,100 In Bangladesh Cyclone

DHAKA, Bangladesh-United News of Bangladesh said at least 1,100 people have died in the cyclone that swept across the country's southwest. Government estimates earlier Friday put the death toll at about one-quarter that.Relief workers are struggling Friday to get help to victims and the thousands left homeless. The cyclone roared ashore last night with driving rain and high waves. Some 650,000 villagers had fled as it approached. An official at the cyclone center in the capital, Dhaka, said most of the people who died were killed by falling trees and debris.Others drowned when they fell off boats. The 140 mile-an-hour winds pushed up 4-foot-high storm surges, swamping whole islands. The storm has subsided but debris from the storm has blocked roads and rivers, making it difficult to reach all the areas that had been hit.The cyclone flattened thousands of flimsy huts, uprooted trees, electricity and telephone poles, and destroyed crops and fish farms in 15 coastal districts.
