ZAGREB-US border police arrested a truck driver wanted for war crimes in Croatia, police in Zagreb said Sunday.Goran Pavic, a 42-year-old Croatian Serb, was crossing the Ambassador Bridge from the Canadian town of Windsor enroute to Detroit when he was stopped.Pavis is accused by Croatia of having participated in ethnic cleansing against the Croatian population while a member of a Serb paramilitary force at the end of 1991 and start of 1992.The alleged war crimes took place around Sotin, in the east of Croatia. Pavis-along with other members of his unit who are still on the run-was charged by the Croatian authorities in 2006 with "assassinations, beatings, intimidation and incarcerations" against residents of the village, of whom 35 are still missing."Now the Croatian justice minister must demand his extradition," Croatian police spokesman Krunoslav Borovec said.Croatia's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 was followed by a five-year war between Zagreb's forces and secessionist Serbs supported by the federal Yugoslav army.
