US deputy secretary of state and former UN ambassador John Negroponte is due in the Pakistan capital later this week, after Bhutto called on Musharraf for the first time to stand down as president. Monday, she was served with a seven-day detention order under the emergency rule Musharraf proclaimed Nov. 3 and the compound where she is staying was surrounded by police.She was thus prevented from leading a three-day protest march to Islamabad. While there were communications between Bhutto and Musharraf before and during the crisis and she hailed his announcement of elections in January a positive step, she has now changed course and announced the break-off of relations.
