Arson attack in woman priest hate campaign

The vicarage of a woman priest who has been subjected to a hate campaign has been attacked by an arsonist. The Rev Yvonne Hobson, 54, has had anonymous letters expressing hatred for women priests sent to her church and home and even left in her vestry.Police were investigating the threats when there was a fire at her £350,000 vicarage in Newlyn, Cornwall. The arsonist placed a burning candle in a log basket in the porch in what police believe was a symbolic act. Firemen put out the blaze.Mrs Hobson has been curate at Paul Church in Newlyn since July 2006 and says the problems began in June.At one point a "particularly frightening" letter was found in her vestry that prompted the Bishop of Truro, Bill Ind, to make an appeal for information from the church's pulpit. The arson attack came four weeks later.A spokesman for the bishop said it was uncertain whether it was a personal attack or an attack against women priests in general.Police said the letters were of a "threatening" nature and "expressed anger at Rev Hobson for being a female priest".
