Francis Nicholson, the colonial governor of Maryland named it "Anne’s City" after the apparently to be heir to the crown. It was originally settled by Virginia Puritans in 1649, but today it is the site of the new peace initiative pushed by the Bush administration. When the Declaration of Independence was signed, four of the signers were from Maryland and three lived in Annapolis in 1776. The city is on stage this week with the highlights being broadcast worldwide. The city was the first peacetime capital in the USA. During the civil war, the city was divided as to loyalties, with feelings for both the North and the South running high. So today, it is again a city that will bring many feelings to the table with the Bush administration vying for a place in the history books. Howbeit, history may say of Bush, "He led the way for the destruction of the USA!" There are many today that see this effort led by Bush as the first step in the dismantling of Israel. The trouble for Israel is, her leaders are inept to stop this effort. The question today is why do Israel’s leaders seem to bend over backward so she can be destroyed?Yitzchak Rabin, who was Israel’s P.M., and was murdered for efforts to bring Israel some peace, gave speech days before he was assassinated. Below is an excerpt from that speech heard in the Knesset. This excerpt reminds us what was really said and builds a picture of what Israel should be standing on."Here, in the land of Israel, we returned and built a nation. Here, in the land of Israel, we established a state. The land of the prophets, which bequeathed to the world the values of morality, law and justice, was, after two thousand years, restored to its lawful owners - the members of the Jewish people. On its land, we have built an exceptional national home and state."We view the permanent solution in the framework of State of Israel which will include most of the area of the Land of Israel as it was under the rule of the British Mandate, and alongside it a Palestinian entity which will be a home to most of the Palestinian residents living in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.We will not return to the 4 June 1967 lines. First and foremost, united Jerusalem … as the capital of Israel, under Israeli sovereignty. "The security border of the State of Israel will be located in the Jordan Valley … The establishment of blocs of settlements in Judea and Samaria, like the one in Gush Katif."We had to choose between the whole of the land of Israel … and a state with less territory, but which would be a Jewish state. We chose to be a Jewish state."… the primary obstacle today, to implementing the peace process between us and the Palestinians, is the murderous terrorism of the radical Islamic terrorist organizations… "… we … committed ourselves before the Knesset, not to uproot a single settlement in the framework of the interim agreement, and not to hinder building for natural growth."We are aware of the fact that the Palestinian Authority has not - up until now - [and never thereafter E.H.] honored its commitment to change the Palestinian Covenant, and that all of the promises on this matter have not been kept. I would like to bring it to the attention of the members of the house that I view these changes as a supreme test of the Palestinian Authority’s willingness and ability, and the changes required will be an important and serious touchstone vis-à-vis the continued implementation of the agreement as a whole."Today as Olmert goes to Annapolis, so do Arab leaders from around the tiny state of Israel. The leaders who are coming want more from Israel. They, in fact, want Bush to make Israel accept the Arab Peace initiative. This initiative would deliver Jerusalem to the Palestinians, the west bank, and of course Gaza already is theirs, plus moves Israel’s borders back to their original lines. In addition, Syria wants Golan back, and the Bush administration would like nothing more than have Israel cave in to the pressure. Many who are watching this say the leaders who are coming, are actually weak. That this meeting is just one of many more such meetings and is the carrot before the stick approach. This American push is one way to get Arab support for its own multi-national aggression in Iraq, Afghanistan, and eventually in Iran. If America can push Israel to accept this new peace agreement, then when the Bush administration goes into Iran, or bombs the daylight out of it, then the Arabs will be more likely to go silently into the night...By Dana G Smith
