2 major private TV channels shut down in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD-Pakistan's two major private channels, GEO TV and ARY TV, closed down their transmission from Dubai at midnight Friday because of pressure from the government, their management said."GEO TV has been ordered to shut down by the authorities of the country from which it is being aired," GEO TV said.It said the country concerned was influenced to order the shutdown by the Pakistan government of President Gen. Pervez Musharraf."We will not be able to air news and current affairs programs and GEO News channel is being shut down," anchorperson Shahid Masood said."GEO aur Jinney Do, (Live and let live)," the channel said in its last broadcast.GEO TV was beaming its programs from Dubai and was among several private channels that were banned by the Pakistan government after the enforcement of a state of emergency on Nov. 3. However, it was being viewed by those who have a big dish antenna in Pakistan.Absar Alam, chief of GEO's Islamabad bureau said that closure of the television would make nearly 5,000 employees without job. GEO TV was owned and operated by Jang group of newspapers.Mohsin Raza, chief of ARY's Islamabad bureau, meanwhile, said its telecast all over the world ceased at midnight Friday.
