Typhoon Faxai likely to approach Izu islands,Tokyo area

TOKYO-Typhoon Faxai in the Pacific is likely to approach the Izu island chain and Kanto region centering on Tokyo as early as Saturday evening, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, warning of strong wind and heavy rain. As of 9 a.m., Faxai, the season's 20th typhoon, was around 550 kilometers south of Cape Shiono in Wakayama Prefecture, moving northeast at 50 km per hour.It was generating winds of up to 126 kph, with an atmospheric pressure of 990 hectopascals near its center. On Saturday night, the typhoon is expected to reach a 190-km radius centering on an area about 50 km east-southeast of Hachijo Island in the Izu island chain. In the Nanki-Shirahama area in Wakayama Prefecture, 48 millimeters of rain fell in an hour and 36 mm fell in an hour on Miyake Island in the Izu islands.The agency predicts up to 200 mm of rain on the islands in the coming 24 hours, up to 120 mm during the hours in the Kanto, Koshin, Tokai and southern Kinki areas, as well as wind of up to 90 kph in the Izu islands and the Kanto area.
