Truck Carrying Radioactive Material Overturns In East Bay

A Sig-alert has been issued for southbound Kirker Pass Road in unincorporated Contra Costa County, California Highway Patrol Officer A. Paulson said Wednesday morning.A pickup truck overturned just before 7:30 a.m. between state Highway 4 and Nortonville Road, Paulson said. The Contra Costa County Health Department told NBC11 it was called to the scene of the crash because the truck was carrying radioactive material. The truck was carrying 10 to 11 boxes of a medical grade, low-level radiological chemical, California Highway Patrol Officer Scott Yox said.Scott Hansen, with Contra Costa Health Services told NBC11 the chemicals, TC99 and TC201, are primarily used for imaging in x-rays.Hansen said they could be hazardous to someone who is two feet away from them. The chemicals pose no immediate health hazard to emergency personnel responding to the accident, Yox said, but both directions of Kirker Pass Road have been closed so the waste can be disposed of safely.A representative from the chemical company is at the crash site, Yox said, and crews are on their way to clean the roadway.Health officials said they will use a device to see if any of the materials leaked, adding that early tests found no leakage.A Sig-alert was issued at 8:11 a.m. and there is no estimate for when the lanes will be opened. The driver of the vehicle was transported to John Muir Hospital, but his injuries are said to be minor, according to NBC11.The driver is a courier who was bringing back the materials to a hospital in Contra Costa County.
