Scholar says regime-hating Iranians could topple mullahs -- with help from U.S.

A historian and scholar hopes his new book will convince Americans that Iran has been waging war on the United States for almost three decades, and that the mullahs who run that country are religious zealots who openly welcome the end of the world.Michael A. Ledeen, resident scholar of the American Enterprise Institute, is author of The Iranian Time Bomb: The Mullah Zealots' Quest for Destruction. He says ever since the attack on the U.S. embassy in 1979, Iran has been at war with the U.S. and is largely responsible for the funding of the terrorist insurgents who are fighting in Iraq."Iran has been raging war on us for 28 years, and we have yet to do anything serious in response," the author laments. "And as time passes, the Iranians' capacity to kill Americans increases; and the longer we wait to respond, the more dangerous it's going to be and the more of us they're going to manage to kill."Ledeen insists there is no escape from this conflict. "They fully intend to the destroy the US as part of their plan for global hegemony, in which they believe," he explains. "They think they've been singled out by their god to destroy the infidel world and to rule over it-and that's their intention.”The scholar supports the idea of helping the Iranian people overthrow the regime. He contends that the "overwhelming majority of Iranians hate the regime" just as the Western world and the US do-and he is confident that if the U.S. government supported them, they would be able to overthrow the mullahs.
