NWO WATCH:EU parliament calls for European force to tackle natural disasters

European parliamentarians on Tuesday called for an EU rapid-reaction force to tackle natural disasters, backing a similar call from Athens following devastating fires on Greece's Peloponnese peninsula. The Eurodeputies, who approved the proposal through a show of hands, called on the European Commission to come up with "concrete proposals."They deplored the political "inertia" on the matter since former French foreign minister Michel Barnier last year mooted the idea of the EU pooling member states' emergency response resources and obtaining its own emergency transport means. At least 65 people have been killed by fires around Greece since August 24, and 200,000 hectares (500,000 acres) of forest and other land destroyed.Nearly 100 fires erupted every day on an average last week, amid widespread local anger that the Greek government had not intervened rapidly and at the scale required. On Monday Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bayokannis urged fellow EU nations to relaunch the plan for a European civil protection force.Barnier's report has been gathering dust largely due to opposition from major EU nations including Britain, Germany and the Netherlands, which deem civil protection to be a matter of national competence. The Eurodeputies also urged the Commission to examine possible cooperation with EU neighbours and other third countries, in the fight against civil emergencies and a "rapid reaction" force which could also draw on private sector resources. With regards to a spate of forest fires which struck several European countries this summer-including Spain, Bulgaria and Italy as well as Greece-the MEPs also complained that in some cases there appeared to be "insufficient solidarity" shown.Several members drew attention to the wider picture seeing the severe forest fires and the catastrophic flooding in Britain as being linked to changes in the climate caused by global warming. They called for the EU's solidarity fund and other financial resources to be unblocked with "the greatest possible flexibility.European International Assistance Commissioner Vladimir Spidla told the House that he would use a fast-track procedure to release assistance.
