Mourners at Iraqi Sunni Tribal Leader's Funeral Vow Revenge on al-Qaida

Mourners at the funeral of Sunni tribal council leader Sheikh Abdul Sattar Abu Risha are calling for revenge following his killing Thursday in a bomb attack near his home in western Iraq. Some 1,500 mourners turned out for the funeral Friday, in al-Anbar province. Those in attendance included Iraq's interior and defense ministers and national security advisor.Iraqi police and U.S. military vehicles lined the route of the procession from the slain leader's home in Ramadi to the burial grounds. There has been no claim of responsibility, but the attack has been widely blamed on al-Qaida in Iraq.Abu Risha last year organized Sunni Arab clans (under the umbrella of the Anbar Awakening Council) to fight al-Qaida in Iraq. He was killed just over a week since meeting in Anbar province with President Bush.U.S. and Iraqi officials have credited him with helping stem the violence in the province. In other news, Iraqi police say at least seven policemen were killed in a suicide truck bombing at a checkpoint in the northern town of Baji Friday. South of Baghdad, assailants shot and killed three people, while in the city of Hillah, an attack on the home of a colonel left one guard dead. The alliance of tribes formally turned against al-Qaida in Iraq last September.
