Massive Russian bomb fails to make impact

The spokeswoman for President Bush has reserved judgment on a massive Russian bomb touted as being four times stronger than the biggest non-nuclear explosive in the US arsenal. The comment came from White House spokeswoman Dana Perino in a news briefing, when she responded to a question from Les Kinsolving, WND's correspondent at the White House."From Moscow, the London Telegraph reports the Russian televising of their new non-nuclear bomb, which is said to be four times more powerful than our Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb, which is capable of destroying nine city blocks in one strike," Kinsolving began. "What's your question, Lester?" said Perino."I'm right on the question," Kinsolving said. "What is the White House response to this report from Moscow?""It's the first I've heard of it, so I don't have a response," she said.Media reports in recent days have carried the story about Russia's successful test by its military of what Russian officials described as the world's most powerful non-nuclear, air-delivered bomb. Russia's state television featured it in the latest show of the nation's military muscle, coming at a time of chilly relations with the US.The reports describe the bomb exploding in an intense fireball that is accompanied by a devastating shockwave underneath a nuclear bomb-like mushroom cloud.Russian television reports said it is four times the strength of the U.S. comparable weapon."The tests have shown that the new air-delivered ordnance is comparable to a nuclear weapon in its efficiency and capability," said Col. Alexander Rukshin, of the Russian military's general staff. But he said there is no release of radiation in the blast. The announcement, and descriptions, are the latest move in the Kremlin's efforts to rebuild the nation's military might and influence around the world. The moves come as relations with Washington are strained because of U.S. criticism of Russia's apparent retreat from more democratic operations.Responding to a second question, Perino said the White House position on a test program allowing Mexican trucks the run of U.S. roads is well-known, and the Department of Transportation is working on it.
