China could have world's largest navy by 2020
A national defense analyst says that as the U.S. Navy continues to shrink, the communist Chinese are rapidly expanding their fleet-possibly becoming the world's largest naval power by 2020.Cliff Kincaid, president of America's Survival, is saying it is no secret the Chinese have been using the billions of dollars they have obtained from the sale of cheap goods to the United States to build up their military. However, he says what is really frightening is the build-up of the Chinese navy, which could pose a major threat to U.S. security."Some analysts say that the Chinese, by the year 2020, will be the largest maritime force [and] have the biggest navy on the face of the globe. This is what's facing us out there," says Kincaid. "Our U.S. Navy leaders don't seem to recognize it-or else they do and they have decided the approach should be to appease the Chinese."Kincaid says that in the meantime, the U.S. Navy continues to downsize. "We are down now to only 276 Navy ships, from a high of 594 under President Reagan-and we're scheduled to decline even further, down to 180 over the next 17 years," he laments. The analyst says that instead of moving to expand the size of the Navy, the Pentagon is pursuing a policy of depending upon the navies of other countries and treaties to protect American interests on the high seas.
