The Public Security Bureau of Jiangsu recently announced three cases of “sending illegal cell phone or Internet messages” in the province. These cases are now uploaded to the official website of the Chinese Ministry of Public Security. Also, the Chinese government recently issued a document encouraging authentic names and personal information in blogs.The three cases are:
1. Two cell phone users sending large amount of messages: “do not use toothpicks in restaurants in this period, because a group of AIDS carriers are now viciously transmitting AIDS in restaurants using toothpicks”.
2. An Internet user posted a message “a student admitted to Tsinghua University in Jingjiang city (Jiangsu province) died in a chase with transportation police, which gave the mother a mental disorder.”
3. An Internet user posted two messages stating “there will be gun shots in a middle-high school in Suzhou, the death toll will surpass that of Virginia Tech.”
The Jiangsu Public Security Bureau accused that these three messages are just “fabricated,” “nonsense,” and “untrue” and detained or admonished 60 of the message senders and transmitters. [1]
Also, the Chinese government recently issued a document encouraging authentic names and personal information in blogs, which appears to be less stringent than the previous prohibition of anonymity in blogs. [2] However, Dr. Zijing Zhou, a law scholar in Ohio State University, indicated that blog users may get in trouble if they do not accept these “encouragements.” [3]
