Baptist-Led Campaign Protests Programs That Demean Blacks

WASHINGTON-A Baptist pastor has begun a series of weekend protests, demanding that media outlets and corporations stop portraying blacks in demeaning and offensive ways. The first demonstration was at the home of Black Entertainment Television's chief executive. More than 500 people demonstrated peacefully last weekend outside the Washington home of Debra Lee. They held signs and wore shirts that said "Enough is Enough," the name of their campaign. The protest was led by the Reverend Delman Coates, who pastors a predominantly black church. His group is calling on corporations to divest from programming and popular culture that sexually objectifies black women and portrays black men as "pimps" and "gangsters."Another protest is planned outside Lee's home this weekend. She says Black Entertainment Television plans to launch 16 "balanced" shows by year's end.
