Attorney rips Illinois school district for requiring students to read 'smut'

A pro-family attorney says an Illinois public school district is guilty of educational malpractice for requiring young students to read a book containing harsh profanity and references to teen sex, which he says is indicative of what's happening in the nation's secular public schools.Prairie Junior High School's required summer reading list for rising eighth-graders gave the 12- and 13-year-olds six books from which to choose. Parents complained to the school board that three of the six books contained adult content. One of the books, Fat Kid Rules the World, has 110 pages containing the F-word and multiple crude sexual references.Yet, according to attorney Matt Barber with Concerned Women for America, the board ignored the parents' complaints. He also says parents were not warned about the profanity and sexual content. "They are pushing their own secular humanist, morally-relative worldview and agenda on these children," he claims. "These are adults who are charged with helping to mold the minds of these young kids, and they're pushing this smut on these kids."According to the Christian attorney, this situation is becoming more commonplace with public schools. "This material is essentially pornographic," he asserts. "This is just indicative of what's going on around the country."Barber says it is outrageous that the required reading for children contained pornography, but even more outrageous that the school board ignored the complaints of parents.
