Winnipeg woman upset over Christ towering above her home

WINNIPEG-A Manitoba woman isn’t saying “Amen” over a huge mural of Jesus being painted on a church facing her house.Josephine Lloyd says she’s furious over the 10-metre-tall depiction of Christ by one of Winnipeg’s most famous mural artists on the side of Tabor Baptist Church. Her complaint isn’t about the religious context. She believes the mural intrudes on an otherwise non-descript and quiet residential street and will pull down the property value of her house.“I thought I was imagining something when I saw it, like there was some strange sort of phenomenon happening ... it was like a drive-in movie,” said Lloyd, who has lived in her home for 15 years.“I don’t think it does any kind of credit to the neighbourhood. It’s like glorified graffiti.”Lloyd said she intends to sell her home in the coming year and fears the mural will spook prospective buyers.
“My neighbours think it’s strange and definitely wouldn’t want to be the person across the street from it.”Church council member Bruno Deleau said the mural isn’t intended to be offensive.Over a year of planning went into the rejuvenation of the 50-year-old building’s exterior.Deleau said a number of prominent artists were consulted and church council members chose local painter Charlie Johnston, who’s painted some of the largest murals in Canada.“The signage on the building was old and decrepit, and the signage was rotting, so we decided we needed to do something new, a new way of depicting it as a church,” said Deleau.“We wanted to make it so that as people drive by the building, there’s something they can relate with right away.”
