ISLAMIC INVASION WATCH:Student group rejects CAIR's demand to cancel Spencer speech

A conservative student group says it won't give in to a demand from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) to cancel a speaking appearance by an author who believes that Islam is the world's most intolerant religion.CAIR has threatened to sue the Young America's Foundation (YAF) for hosting author Robert Spencer this afternoon at its annual National Conservative Student Conference being held this week at George Washington University. An attorney for CAIR sent a letter to YAF claiming Spencer is "a well-known purveyor of hatred and bigotry against Muslims" and "has a history of false and defamatory statements."The letter says, without being specific, that several of those statements "would constitute a federal criminal offense."Spencer, who has written several books and hundreds of articles on jihad and Islamic terrorism, plans to give a speech at the convention called"The Truth about the Council on American-Islamic Relations."Young America's spokesman Jason Mattera says he was not surprised by CAIR's lawsuit threat."CAIR would rather stifle free speech, not encourage it," states Mattera;"but I mean, honestly,if I was CAIR and I had ties to terrorist organizations,I would try to suppress the truth as well."But while the YAF spokesman says he cannot blame CAIR for their reaction,he also testifies that "their intimidation tactics and bullying"will not work on his organization."It may work on other groups, but it doesn't work on us,"he says bluntly,"and not only are we going to allow Robert Spencer to speak,we're going to open the audience up to many more people."Attorney Joseph Sandler, who wrote the demand letter on behalf of CAIR,is also general counsel of the Democratic National Committee.Spencer's response to the CAIR letter?"Note the personal smears, the attempt to bully and intimidate, and the non-specificity of the charges,"he says on the website for conservative columnist Michelle Malkin, then adds:"They can't be specific, because I don't say anything inaccurate about them,or about Islam or jihad."
