SALT LAKE CITY-Health officials are declaring that a parasitic infection has reached epidemic proportions in the state of Utah.As a result they are placing new restrictions on public swimming pools and water parks for the remainder of the season.Part of those restrictions will actually prevent certain groups of people from even getting into pools and parks. This announcement was made by first explaining that the initial plan was to enforce a mandatory closing of all public and private pools.They say in order to be less disruptive to the public however they are going to try restrictions first. Those restrictions ban children under the age of five or those in diapers from going to pools and water parks.“Not only are they more likely to contaminate the pools, but they are also more likely to become contaminated,” says Dr. Joseph miner of the Utah County Health Department. Cryptosporidium is a parasite causing severe and long-lasting diarrhea. It has been declared an epidemic in Utah.“It appears this outbreak started in Utah County or the south and has migrated to the north,” says Lewis Garrett from the Davis County Health Department.An average of 30 cases are reported each year and so far more than 400 cases have been reported this summer.
