Humans are much more than "big brained apes" despite evidence about animal behaviour that might suggest the contrary, an expert has said.The myth that many animals had human-like abilities arose because their similarities have been over-hyped, according to Dr David Premack, from the University of Pennsylvania,Philadelphia.The human brain was wired in a way unlike that of any ape and this is reflected in unique patterns of behaviour,he said in an article in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Ignoring the important differences between animals and humans had given a misleading impression, Dr Premack argued.Microscopic differences in the organisation of ape and human brains first came to light in 1999.Visual cortex nerve cells were organised in a complex mesh-like pattern quite unlike the simple arrays found in other primates.A particular type of neuron involved in social emotion and intelligence was also far more prevalent and larger in humans than in apes. These biological differences gave rise to distinct differences in behavioural ability.He examined several areas in which animals had been said to display human-like traits, including teaching, deception, memory, and language.In all cases, similarities were small whereas dissimilarities were large.Intelligent animal behaviour appeared to be mainly the result of focusing on a single goal, such as finding food.
