
Border guards shot dead
Human Rights Watch on Tuesday said it had sent a letter to the Egyptian interior ministry calling for an investigation to be launched into allegations that border guards had killed three Sudanese trying to cross into Israel.The New York-based body cited Israeli reports that Egyptian border guards had shot dead one refugee and beaten to death two others.
Egyptian security forces on July 22 shot dead a Darfuri woman as she and 26 other African migrants tried to cross into Israel.The following day,Egyptian police shot and wounded a Sudanese man as he tried to do the same.A security source at the border said that 220 African refugees had been detained in July trying to enter Israel illegally,most of them Darfuris.
According to UN figures,1 200 refugees from Sudan were in Israel,among them 300 from the war-torn Darfur region.
