LAND FULL of VIOLENCE:Japan to send 4 observers for Guatemala national elections

TOKYO-The Japanese Foreign Ministry said Friday it will dispatch four observers to Guatemala to monitor the Central American country's upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections on Sept. 9.The dispatch is in response to a request by the Organization of American States, a regional cooperation body in the area.The ministry said the elections will be the third to be held since 1996 when civil war came to an end after 36 years.The latest elections will be held for the first time after substantial portions of election management have been transferred to local authorities, the ministry said.According to the ministry, the Japanese government also extended $86,000 in grants to the OAS election observation mission in Guatemala.
