TOKYO-Seiji Maehara, former president of the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan, on Sunday showed understanding of extending a law to continue Japan's refueling of U.S.-led forces in the Indian Ocean in support of antiterrorism operations in Afghanistan."As 75 countries are participating in the fight against terrorism, it will be against the national interest if Japan gets out of it,"the DPJ lawmaker said on a TV Asahi talk show. "It is good to participate in some form, and refueling on the ocean is the best way at the present stage."Last week, DPJ President Ichiro Ozawa rejected a request by U.S. Ambassador to Japan Thomas Schieffer to agree to extending the special antiterrorism law.If the law is extended, it will allow Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force to continue the operations in support of U.S.-led antiterrorism operations beyond its Nov. 1 expiration.Meanwhile, senior DPJ lawmaker Satsuki Eda, who took the post of president of the House of Councillors last week,indicated on an NHK program that more discussions are needed on the matter."Though I'm not in a position to say what should be done, I wonder whether Japan-U.S. relations should be determined by the relationship between U.S. President (George W.) Bush and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe," Eda said."It would be wise" for the two sides to further promote discussions, he said.On another special law that authorizes the dispatch of Air Self- Defense Force troops to help in Iraq's reconstruction, Maehara emphasized he is opposed to it, saying the ASDF "should withdraw" from the mission.DPJ Diet affairs chief Susumu Yanase, speaking on another television program,also voiced opposition to the law and expressed his desire to scrap it. After taking control of the upper house following the July 29 House of Councillors election, DPJ chief Ozawa has said his party will consider submitting a bill aimed at canceling the dispatch of ASDF troops to help in Iraq's reconstruction.PS:What is really starting to worry me is that I think there is much more-"long term"-behind this "anti terrorism law" than waht we think.
