END TIMES WEATHER:Homes evacuated as floods, landslides hit Tasmania

FLOODING has eased in Tasmania's northeast where the effort has turned from evacuating homes to assessing the damage.Up to 50 homes were evacuated across the communities of Branxholm and Derby overnight, after the Ringarooma River burst its banks about 9.15pm (AEST) yesterday."It's a beautiful clear morning now, not a cloud in the sky,'' the mayor of Dorset Peter Partridge said."I think that the danger has passed (and) we've now got to assess the damage."We've lost one bridge that is close to the $1 million mark."The flood peak has moved down towards the Gladstone area and they council staff are in that area now putting up road closed signs.''Branxholm, 93km north-east of Launceston on the Tasman Highway, is a quiet timber town nestled in a valley. Evacuation centres were set up at the Branxholm Football Ground, the Scottsdale RSL and at the Derby Hall. Mayor Partridge said despite the widespread flooding and damage he was not aware of anyone who had lost their home, or of any injuries caused overnight.Other parts of Tasmania have also been hit by flooding.
