The third tropical storm of the season formed Tuesday and died Tuesday night in the Atlantic without posing any threat to land, forecasters said. The remnants of short-lived Tropical Storm Chantal were located 260 miles east-southeast of Halifax,Nova Scotia, and were speeding toward the northeast, away from the US,according to forecaster Dan Brown of the National Hurricane Center in West Miami-Dade County. Its squalls might brush Newfoundland,he said, but were merging with a non-tropical weather system.Meanwhile,a system far to the south offered potentially more interest.
That disturbance, centered about 425 miles east of the southern Windward Islands, weakened Tuesday but could become a tropical depression within a few days,Avila said.''Even if development does not occur, this system will likely bring a few squalls to the Windward Islands during the next day or so,'' said forecaster Lixion Avila."An Air Force plane is scheduled to investigate the system on Wednesday afternoon, if necessary.''
