China: Communist Party to Meet Oct. 15

A major congress expected to produce a new Communist Party leadership team will open on Oct. 15, the state news media reported. The dates of the gathering, held just twice a decade, had been kept secret for months by President Hu Jintao and other top leaders. Mr. Hu, who is also chief of the party, is expected to use the congress to place allies in major leadership positions to solidify his grip on power.
