TERROR WATCH:Australia drops terrorism charges against Indian doctor

Australian authorities on Friday dropped charges against an Indian-born doctor accused of providing material support to the suspects in the bomb plots foiled in Britain in June.Dr. Mohammed Haneef, 27, was facing charges for providing "reckless support" to a terrorist
organization.Commonwealth prosecutors withdrew that charge in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday,following a review of the case by Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions Damian Bugg.On Friday Bugg said during his review he found no reasonable chance of convicting Haneef,who was jailed July 2 by police as he was trying to leave Australia for IndiaThe review was prompted after inconsistencies in the case involving main pieces of evidence against Haneef emerged.Haneef had been charged with supporting a terrorist organization because he gave his mobile phone SIM card to a second cousin,Sabeel Ahmed,in July last year.Ahmed has been charged in Britain in connection with the attacks.A court ordered Haneef's release on bail last week,but Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews kept him in prison by canceling his visa on character grounds,based on
information provided by the federal police.Because he has no visa to remain in Australia,Haneef may have to remain in custody while he appeals the immigration minister's decision.That case is due before a court on August 8.
