PESTILENCE WATCH:Man Talks About Devastating Effects Of West Nile

SACRAMENTO He was the first person ever in Placer County to contract West Nile Virus. While most people only get a little sick, he is proof of the dangerous potential hidden in mosquito bites. His first thought was that he was having a stroke, but it was West Nile that cut Orlando Gonzales down. Within hours he deteriorated into a coma like state.“I couldn't walk talk nothing,” says Gonzales.Over the next year, he slept 23 hours a day-a complication from West Nile. His brain had swelled too big for his skull.“All your motor skills your thought process, gone,” he says.Even a chaplain told him his time had come.“I kept saying I'm fine and she said it's okay let go,” says Gonzales. While living a busy life now,Orlando will never fully recover physically.“When it becomes dusky I'm not outside at all,” he says. His concern now, people don't seem to know the devastating potential packed in a mosquito bite.“You can't live your live in fear all the time, but you do need to be aware. It can ruin your life,” he says. What really scares Orlando is when he sees people, especially children, outside playing around dusk. He wonders if they’re wearing insect repellent, because a little repellant can make a lifesaving difference.
