PESTILENCE WATCH:Another Bird Tests Positive For West Nile

The Contra Costa County Mosquito and Vector Control District has reported that a seventh dead bird has tested positive for West Nile virus this year. The positive birds have been found in Lafayette, Oakley, Brentwood, San Ramon and, most recently, in Bay Point, the district reported.Last year the county reported eight human cases of the mosquito-born virus, two of which were fatal. As of Tuesday, nine people in California had been diagnosed with the illness, eight in Kern County and one in San Joaquin County. One person from Kern County has died from the illness, according to the state's West Nile virus activity report.Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District spokeswoman Deborah Bass said last week that while the number of positive birds is not unusual for mid-July, the district is predicting a strong year for the virus.People can help control mosquito populations by removing all standing water on their property and taking care not to over water lawns, gardens or potted plants.
