PERSECUTION WATCH:VIETNAM

Two Degar Montagnard Christians,Y-Thot Butrang and his wife, H’Thui Ya, returned to their native Vietnam after spending nearly one year in the United Nations refugee camp in Mondolkiri province,Cambodia.Vietnamese officials visited the camp and promised that returnees would not suffer harm.Shortly after their return to Degar,Y-Thot was arrested,brutally beaten,and sentenced to eleven years in prison.In December,2006,H’Thui was arrested in the family’s home leaving their two young children alone and without supervision.Eleven days later two village ladies rescued the children and began making attempts to locate their mother in prison.In May, 2007, their efforts were successful when they found the children’s mother in Daknong Province Prison.All burst into tears upon seeing each other when granted permission for a brief thirty minute visit.While incarcerated, H’Thui has been deprived of food, and has been beaten and tortured regularly. Her legs are bruised and swollen and she can barely walk since her legs have been chained between two logs during her confinement. She has been sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for illegal crossing of the Cambodia-Vietnam border and for refusing to join the government-sanctioned church. H’Thui is twenty-nine years old and her children are four and five years old.
