'Out of nowhere' fruit fly gene discovered

ITHACA,N.Y.-U.S. scientists say the finding of a new fruit fly gene might contradict the theory that new genes are formed from existing ones. The Cornell University researchers said the new gene, called hydra, exists in only a small number of species of Drosophila fruit flies, suggesting it was created about {13 million years ag}, when the melanogaster subgroup species diverged from a common ancestor. The finding is said to be consistent with work of other scientists who are discovering many of the most recently formed functional genes in any species also are expressed in male testes and appear related to spermatogenesis."This is a de novo-'out of nowhere'-gene,"said Hsiao-Pei Yang,a Cornell research associate and senior author of the study. "People used to think that new genes were always formed from tinkering with other genes, but with this gene we can find no homologues(genes with a similar structure)and that is what is unique."Yang conducted part of the study while at the National Yang-Ming University in Taiwan and part in collaboration with Cornell Assistant Professor Daniel Barbash. The research appeared in the July 6 online issue of PLoS Genetics.

PS:Those brackets in red are mine.I simply don't believe the earth is that old.I wonder what evolutionist will think about this "new gene"....we'll wait and see...
