Today is President Bush's 61st birthday and while I would like to wish him a very happy birthday I might also suggest he look to exchange the "gift" his wife gave him a few days ago.In an interview with CNN this week, First Lady Laura Bush stated that condoms were "absolutely essential" and off camera reportedly told the interviewer that she had no problem if the Democratic Congress waives a key pro-abstinence legislative requirement. The requirement, which FRC strongly supports, says that 1/3 of monies set aside for the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) must go to the successful abstinence-until-marriage programs in Africa. The First Lady's purported comments contrast sharply with her previous statement in support of the Administration's promotion of abstinence in fighting AIDS in Africa. "Abstinence is absolutely 100 percent effective in eradicating a sexually transmitted disease," the First Lady told a reporter this past January, "In a country or a part of the world where one in three people have a sexually transmitted deadly disease, you have to talk about abstinence."Condom distribution does little to combat the spread of many STD's and condom distribution programs are more designed to line the pockets of International Planned Parenthood than to prevent disease. If the First Lady wants to ensure that more people in Africa can celebrate happy birthdays alongside her husband, she should support the President's proven abstinence program.
