Lightning kills 70 in Upper Dir near Afghan border

ISLAMABAD-Up to 70 people, including women and children,were killed by lightning in three villages of Upper Dir district in northwestern Pakistan bordering Afghanistan on Friday,AAJ Tv reported.The report quoted officials of the North West Frontier Province in Peshawar as saying that 15 bodies have been recovered from the debris of the collapsed houses while search for other bodies and survivors was continuing.The provincial government announced that it will extend cash compensation for the families of the deceased and injured people, the report said.Upper Dir is part of Malakand Division in NWFP bordering Afghanistan and is known as an area which is frequently struck by heavy rains, landslides and flash floods.
