House Takes Aim at Reducing Abortions

WASHINGTON-The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a $647
million bill that takes aim at reducing abortions. The"Reducing the Need for Abortions Initiative"is part of the annual Labor,Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill for the Fiscal Year 2008.House Democrats Tim Ryan of Ohio and Rosa L. DeLauro of Connecticut put the bill together hoping to bring both sides of the abortion debate into an agreement on the best way to move forward and reduce abortions."It is our moral obligation to address those issues with which all sides agree,"Rep. Ryan said.
"Whether you are pro-life like me or pro-choice like my friend Congresswoman DeLauro, the common ground we must build upon is our serious desire to reduce the rate of abortions,"he said.Rep. DeLauro hopes to move"beyond the question of the legality of abortion and toward actually reducing the need for abortion and providing critical investments for families.""Of all the important goals this initiative can help us reach,"she said,"perhaps the most important is that it helps move us all forward on this issue."The initiative would increase funding for many existing programs, including increased funding for centers that provide access to contraceptive information and services. It also would provide more money for groups promoting abstinence education.According to provisions of the bill, more money will be provided for Teen Pregnancy Prevention Grants for"medically accurate, age-appropriate approaches to preventing teen pregnancies that include information about both abstinence and contraception, including the dissemination of science-based tools and strategies to prevent HIV,STD,and teen pregnancy."
The bill also provides health care and other services for pregnant women as well as young children.
