Getting the Gospel out through radio into rebel territory in Congo

Congo-Kinshasa-The volatile eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo has displaced hundreds of thousands, while also prompting new ideas for outreach.Grace Ministries International's Sam Vinton says Radio Kahuzi staff is trying to figure out how to get radios into the rebel-held areas. Violence erupted in January when the government and a powerful leader agreed to combine troops in an attempt to pacify the area.Though a peace deal was signed three years ago, militias have remained active in eastern Congo."They continually keep coming into villages and massacring people, stealing, and so on," Vinton explains."That (evangelizing) is a burden that they (WCGB) have right now. 'How do we get something to those people that the armies and the UN have not been able to reach?' Maybe the Gospel should be considered a real answer to this."Vinton says that through the years of civil war, God sustained the radio ministry in Bukavu. In fact, it's grown into Kindu, Kumba and Cameroon, along with increased demand for the Bible correspondence course. The leadership team of the GMI-affiliated churches in these regions launched Lake Site Radio in Kumba. It's the strongest station in the area, with a signal that is broad.Listeners are responding to the teachings of the doctrine of salvation.Growth is encouraging, and it may lead to their hearts' desire.Says Vinton, "I think the biggest prayer is that the power of the Gospel would be able to penetrate into the areas where no one would be able to dare to go into that jungle area to try to reach these people. They're out there, and the Gospel certainly through radio can reach them. That, I think, would be our greatest prayer need."
