TOKYO-A powerful typhoon raced up the Japanese archipelago Saturday, injuring at least 34 people, cutting power and snarling transportation, officials said.By Saturday afternoon,Typhoon Man-Yi was bearing down on Makurazaki city on the southern tip of the southern main island of Kyushu after lashing the Okinawa island chain Friday with heavy rain and fierce winds.A 63-year-old woman suffered fractures after she was knocked over by the wind early Saturday in Kyushu's Kagoshima prefecture (state), local official Akihiro Waki said.Another 33 people were injured, mostly due to strong winds, as the typhoon blustered its way up the island chain's east coast, according to local officials.As Man-Yi approached Makurazaki city, it was clocking sustained wind speeds of up to 100 miles per hour and gusts up to 133 miles an hour, the meteorological agency said.The agency warned of heavy rains, high waves and strong winds, predicting up to 40 inches of rain in parts of the region.The typhoon was moving north at 18.6 miles per hour early Saturday and was forecast to move close to the capital, Tokyo, on Sunday. It wasn't clear if Tokyo would take a direct hit.Over 5,500 people evacuated across Okinawa and Kagoshima on Saturday, officials said.
