END TIMES WEATHER:High Temperature Breaks Record

SEATTLE-Cooling centers were open in many Western Washington locations on Wednesday afternoon as temperatures crept toward-or exceeded-record highs for the day.The temperature at Sea-Tac Airport hit 97 degrees at 4 p.m., breaking the record for this date of 95, set in 1951, said KIRO 7 Chief Meteorologist Andy Wappler."Not only is it a record, but it is one of a handful of times when Sea-Tac has hit the upper 90s in the last 10 years," Wappler said.The all-time high for Sea-Tac Airport is 100, set on July 20, 1994, Wappler said.An excessive heat warning was in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday night as temperatures climbing into the mid 90s to near 100 degrees, 20 to 25 degrees above normal.Cities opened air conditioned facilities to offer residents relief from the heat.The 99 degrees recorded in Hoquiam on Tuesday was an all-time high.The National Weather Service said the previous record was 98 set in 1981 and 1961.Forecasters also said records for Tuesday's date were 86 at Bellingham, and 85 at Stampede Pass.Temperatures should start to ease on Thursday and cool into the weekend.High temperatures also are forecast for Eastern Washington-in the upper 90s and breaking 100 through Saturday.
