CULTURE of DEATH:1.5 MILLION NIGERIAN WOMEN COMMIT ABORTION ANNUALLY

Abuja-An estimated 1.5 million Nigerian women commit abortion annually, the non-governmental organization Post Abortion Care Network(PAC),said in Kaduna,northwest Nigeria Sunday.Dr Habibu Sadauki,the National Coordinator for the organization's northwest zone said that complicated cases of abortion claimed 220,000 lives in Africa's most populous country in 2006.Sadauki said that unsafe abortions were on the rise and were performed mostly by quacks,adding that it had accounted for 40 per cent of maternal deaths in the country.He said the organization aimed to create awareness of the
dangers of abortion."Cases of abortion have now become a social problem to almost every family in Nigeria and there is need for enlightenment on the issue,'' he said.
