Church Helps Chechen Children of War

September 2004 in Beslan:Islamic radicals stormed a school and took about 1,000 teachers, students, and parents hostage.Russian troops surrounded the building.At the end of a three day siege, more than 300 people,half of them children,were dead.The people were devastated.
The vicious attack created deep anger among the citizens of Beslan,and a desire for revenge against the people of Chechnya,where the terrorists came from.But one Christian church near Beslan is showing compassion instead.
Chechnya, a nearby republic,had been fighting since 1994 to gain its independence from Russia. The leader of the siege was Shamil Basayev, a jihadist who saw the conflict as a holy war between Christian Russia and Muslim Chechnya.
"The terrorists did not spare even our children.They didn't spare our children,why should we spare theirs? We shall never forgive," one Chechen resident said.But that's not the attitude of some Christians at Transfiguration Church.The church is just a few miles from the school where so many died.Church members are risking their lives to help the Chechen people."They realized they have to bring the Gospel to the Chechen people, and I believe that's a huge breakthrough and it's a huge achievement for Christianity,"Pastor Gennady Terkun said,"Believers today believe that in response to that terror attack in Beslan,they can go and bring love and peace back to their families and their children."The Association for Spiritual Renewal, a ministry dedicated to building the church in the former Soviet Union, is assisting Pastor Terkun....
