A coalition of pro-family groups is calling Christian activists to the nation's capital to take a public stand against proposed hate crimes legislation. On July 11, several activist groups-among them Repent America, Elijah Ministries, Pass the Salt Ministries, Minutemen United, and Brotherhood of a New Destiny-will conduct a news conference regarding Senate Bill S 1105. At the press conference, group spokesmen will address the motivation behind hate crimes legislation, which many believe will seek to criminalize Christianity in the United States. Michael Marcavage, president of Repent America, says hate crimes legislation is unnecessary."We already have laws for those who act violently towards others," Marcavage says."As Christians we do not advocate violence against other people, so that's not an issue. However, the lawmakers in Washington are attempting to criminalize Christians because of their faith in Jesus Christ and because they choose to speak the truth of God's Word. And that's exactly what is happening."Marcavage also believes that Christians are becoming more and more aware as pastors get information and accounts of people who have been affected around the world because of hate crime laws. He says that these laws should properly be called "thought crime laws" because they are policing people's motives.Marcavage says concerned Christians who cannot make it to Washington, DC, for the July 11 rally should contact their U.S. senators about the proposed law. The rally will take place following the news conference.
