
At least 6,000 people could be infected by Clostridium difficile (C difficile) each year, which is 50 per cent more than official figures suggest. Accepted statistics indicate that more than 4,000 people were hit by C difficile in 2005. But early results of more detailed reporting have revealed the problem has been hugely underestimated, with more than 115 people a week contracting the bug.
